Paris on screen: 4 films to (re)discover before you unpack your bags

Let’s explore the timeless charm of Paris through four cinematic masterpieces.

Before arriving at Hôtel des Grands Voyageurs, with its Art Deco atmosphere, allow these stories to fuel your imagination and enrich your Parisian escape.

1. À Bout de Souffle (Jean-Luc Godard, 1959)

The first major film of the French New Wave, Breathless is a bold, free-spirited stroll through the streets of the Left Bank and Montparnasse. We follow Michel (Belmondo) and Patricia (Seberg) as they wander through iconic cafés like Le Select and La Rotonde on Boulevard Montparnasse, and along the Quai Saint-Michel. The façade of the Hôtel des Rives de Notre-Dame even makes a notable appearance, later inspiring key locations in the film.
Cult scene: Michel’s tragic final run on Rue Campagne-Première, just south of Montparnasse.

2. Le Fabuleux Destin d’Amélie Poulain (Jean-Pierre Jeunet, 2001)

This whimsical urban fairytale brings Montmartre to life: the Café des Deux Moulins (15 rue Lepic), the Lamarck–Caulaincourt metro station, and the Louise Michel Square at the foot of Sacré-Cœur. These nearly untouched places become magical settings in Amélie’s world.
Tasty anecdote: The famous crème brûlée from the film is still served at the café — one crack of the caramel crust and you're right back with Amélie.

3. Minuit à Paris (Woody Allen, 2011)

A nostalgic love letter to Paris. Owen Wilson plays a writer who mysteriously time-travels at midnight, encountering Hemingway, Zelda Fitzgerald, and other icons of the Roaring Twenties as he wanders along the Seine and past grand Left Bank hotels. These enchanted nocturnal walks capture the very essence of Parisian magic.

4. Sous le ciel de Paris (Julien Duvivier, 1951)

A poetic, human portrait of Paris filmed almost entirely outdoors — in streets, markets (notably Rue Mouffetard), and along the Left Bank’s quays. One unforgettable moment features a singer belting out “Sous le ciel de Paris” near the Tuileries Gardens. The film is a lyrical celebration of the everyday lives and stories that color the city's heart.

These four films embody the soul of the Left Bank: bohemian, romantic, literary, and deeply cinematic. Whether it’s Godard’s intellectual fever or Jeunet’s dreamlike sweetness, these stories echo through the cobbled streets, cafés, and riverbanks you’re about to explore. By staying at Hôtel des Grands Voyageurs, you step into a world where fiction and reality blend — an immersive "slow content" experience that begins before you even arrive.
